I would recommend this game overall to those who enjoy games such as 'The Turing Test' or 'Portal 2,' as it combines an interesting narrative with a unique setting and gameplay. It is also reasonably priced so it is great value for money considering the length of the game. Aside from the cons, most of which I can easily overlook, this game is a clear winner in my book.Pros- Stunning visuals, from the decor of the hotel to the simple aesthetic of the puzzle rooms. I wish the Penrose was a real hotel! If it's one thing you'll notice, it's how professionally designed the hotel is.- Captivating storyline that enticed me to continue solving the puzzles even when I came close to giving up.- Fitting musical scores and sound tracks, particularly the main theme with the orchestra.- Puzzle mechanics are easy to learn but get progressively more difficult to master. Overall it provides a balanced difficulty level.- (SPOILER) Replayability element for those interested in discovering the ending they didn't choose (like myself). The puzzles are much faster to progress through the second time around once I mastered the puzzle mechanics. Cons- Communication device is always in the bottom right corner of the screen. I know that it is needed to indicate which colour I currently absorbed, but there must be a better way to implement this instead of having it take up such a large portion of the screen with no option of disabling it.- There are many puzzles in which I had to restart manually from the puase menu because I committed a mistake which traps me in a section with no ability to escape or proceed. This was a bit annoying, especially when I end up reaching the end of a long puzzle only to find myself having to restart because I forgot a minor detail (which happened frequently on my first playthrough). - Not well optimised on lower end systems as there were sections with severe frame drops. The graphics options available are 'best' and 'fast' (which I used), with no room to manually toggle specific graphical settings on or off.- No option to manually save within a puzzle. This became an issue with a handful of puzzles which had individual mini puzzles within them, as dying or quitting the game midway would always bring you back to the beginning of the puzzle. I suggest having a manual save option while keeping the 'restart challenge' option to cover both scenarios.. I just finished a full playthrough, and may I say this was a refreshing taste of a story orientated gameplay, I personally find it finds a nice balance between sitting to hear dialogue and (for me atleast) fairly physcologically stimulating puzzles, great game to play while the internets down, I wish there more games like this instead of being flooded by first person shooters with the only story and character building being done with the explicit intent of killing off the character in question, fairly suprising story overall though, and on a final note the atmosphere and art style and excicution remind me of a insception-esk design. My overall rating is a 7/10. Game could use better polish and voice recording could be improved but bear in mind those flaws didn't hinder the imersion pretty much at all.. EXCESSIVE backtracking ruins an otherwise interesting puzzle game.I want you to imagine the original Portal (since this game borrows from it at every opportunity), except that after every 5 test chambers, Glados forces you to run to the opposite end of a LONG corridor and back 5 times, then hunt for a tiny clickable prop in a room while she repeats a vague hint every 45 seconds. Also, there's no sprint key, and seemingly-obvious shortcuts where you could, for example, jump over a bannister/railing are blocked by invisible walls. If the only way you can think of to deliver your game's narrative is by forcing the player to run around in a circle for 10 minutes while they listen to disembodied voice clips, you need to go back to the drawing board. It's been a long time since I've played a game that was this bizarrely disrespectful of the player's time.... I guess being forced to sit through a half-hour philosophical monologue in The Witness was worse.. Spetrum Retreat is a first person narritive driven puzzle game in the same vain as games like portal. You are trapped in a monotinous cycle as a resident of the mysterious Penrose Hotel and, with the help of a voice on your phone, you must make your way to the roof in order to escape. The game is divided into sections with multiple puzzel levels that all revolve around moving colours to specific points to pass through doors. These puzzels are very numerous and quiet challenging. The unique puzzel mechanics are very entertaining and you feel a sense of achievement when you beat a particualry intricate level. The puzzel sections are intercut with narrative sections that reveal the mystery of the hotel. The narrative is intriguing and well presented both viusally and through dialogue. The theme of monotony is especially strong in the design ellements of the hotel and the repetitive nature of the story. Graphically this game is stunning to look at. The grand but isolated hotel reminded me especially of the Shining. The game is quite short, but considering its low price point and the quality of the puzzels this is not a problem to me. I'm about halfway through and am finding increasing difficulty appropriatly challenging, and as more mechanics are added regualrly it keeps the game fresh and moving. My only complaint would be the lack of an ajustable FOV slider, but hopefully a future patch can fix this.I would deffinitly recommend the spectrum retreart. It feels like a £20 or more game in quality and presentation, and so it being avaliable for £10 is an absolute steel and will entertain and challenge you. I can't wait to see how the story ends.. A story that elicited more than a few eyerolls told mostly by Navi with a British accent meets a decent first-person puzzler that begs for a checkpoint system and has some wonky physics. I know FPP games are hard to come by, but do yourself a favor and (re)play Portal 2 or Q.U.B.E. 2 instead.. Pretty good puzzle game in the same vein as QUBE or The Turing Test. It's not overly difficult but challenging enough to keep you engaged and the progression of difficulty is well-paced. It took me just over 5 hours to complete but your mileage may vary.My only complaint is that it is far too easy to get into a fail state during a puzzle and have to restart the entire room again, it would have been nice to have mid-puzzle checkpoints during some of the longer sections. Most of the puzzles are short enough though that that's not a massive issue. The story and setting are fairly compelling, and the voice-acting is fairly good too. The slightly spooky atmosphere works well to have you on edge and give the feeling that something isn't quite right. All in all, if you like games such as The Turing Test, QUBE, The Talos Principle, Pneuma: Breath of Life, or Portal, I can highly recommend this. If you get it on sale, even better.. As an okay puzzle game with a fun mystery reveal, I'd say this is worth a playthough, particularly since it's only around 3 hours long. Essentially you are moving colors around, which you can either store on a block or hold it to let you walk through walls of that color. The major problem with this game is that there are constant hard fail states where you are forced to restart the level, which is particularly and acutely apparent on the final level where it takes just forever to get to the actual puzzles. This is exacerbated by the molasses walking speed accompanied by the ice skates you are apparently wearing. It'll take forever to get around, and when you want to stop, don't worry, you'll slide right into that instant death pit and have to meander your way back. The game ever starts to acknowledge this near the end, when it just teleports you past the boring bits. At 3 hours the game begins to overstay it's welcome, it could be a bit less boring in the first hour, and hard fail states really break the pace, otherwise take a crack at it.. I'd love to recommend this game, but I can't play it. I believe I meet the specs, but things like the fov and motion blur make it very uncomfortable for me to play.. Overall, for £9.99 Spectrum Retreat served it's purpose. It had just enough story and just enough puzzle to keep me going to the end. Though, the frustrations with the end did make it a close call as to whether I would make it to the final scene. Had this been priced higher I would have a harder time justifying the spend. But, if you want something that at least makes a decent attempt at a Portal/Talos Principle, without some of the absolutely monstrous puzzles they could throw at you, then it might want a look. Though, looking for anything more than a casual challenge and this will not scratch that itch.
